A Streetcar Named Desire (Manchester Royal Exchange)

January 03, 2023

I don't want realism. I want magic!

In the New Orleans house of Stanley and Stella Kowalski, a visitor arrives. Debt has sunk the family home in Mississippi and Stella’s fragile sister Blanche is coming to stay.

As the summer heat floats up from the sidewalk and the liquor gets poured, Blanche invades her sister’s marriage and ignites a dark and violent conflict with the brooding and bullish Stanley.

Associate Artist Maxine Peake takes on the iconic role of Blanche DuBois, a woman living on stories of a glamorous past but frightened of what the future might hold.

Reunited with Manchester Royal Exchange Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom, following their critically acclaimed productions of Hamlet and The Skriker, the pair take on Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer-Prize winning masterpiece.

Manchester Royal Exchange performance dates:  8 SEPTEMBER 2016 - 15 OCTOBER 2016
